THE RAINY SEASON IN BENGAL

        Md. Abdul Mannan Yaqubi

                       ............

Watching the land of Bengal

           Afflicted with thirst,

The clouds get their tender hearts

             Seriously hurt.

So, like the black rafts they float

             Across the vast sky,

And cover the face of the sun

              That lies so high.

Then they accompany the rebel

             Dance of lightning,

And start beating their drums to make

              The sound rumbling.

Strokes fly for unknown destination

              Through dark clouds,

As though they got some informations

                From true source.

The melody of the dance of rain

                Is charming,

And it looks like the fairy dance with

                  Tinkling ring.

The land gets pulsation of life

                  And purity,

And the nature of Bengal gets

                 Youth and beauty.

The awaking trees, plants and

            Grasses seem festive,

And they turn into deep green

             That looks attractive.

Heap of water in the river

              Sounds murmuring,

And the buzzing sound of

               Crooking is resounding.

Distending the tail feathers

              Peacocks dance nicely,

That seems to receive

               The rainy season warmly.

Boats, lunch, canoes and rafts

           Are used to cross water,

And thus Business activities

           Become easier.

Kadam, Kumud and the lotus

            Bloom everywhere,

And they add to the beauty of

             Bengal's nature.

Hasnahena,, tube roses

         And the Chamely,

Make the way and the waiting

          Room scented sweetly.

Varieties of flowers bloom

           In Bengal nicely,

And lakes and ponds are

           Attracted with the lily.

The Aush paddy is harvested

             By the farmer,

And then the Amon plants are

             Transplanted with cheer.

The rain gifts Bengal varieties

              Of fish species

Which, during this season, people

               Day and night fish.

Hog-palms, lemons, bananas

       Guavas and pineapple,

Make people's tongue juicy

         In the land of Bengal.

Bindweed, arum, Putishak

           Okra, and egg plants are,

During rainy season,

             Got everywhere.

The devastating flood by

           Excessive rainfall,

Is, of course, a curse to all

          The marooned people.

The old huts and the fields

          Of poor farmers,

Are often damaged by rain and

             The flood water.

At times, men, women and

           Children day and night,

Are died by Lightning and

           The poisonous snake  bite.

The suffering of man and

            Animal goes on,

And various fatal diseases

             Break out soon.

Hearths that absorb water are

            Useless for  cooking,

And it brings to the poor

            A great suffering.

During the rain it seems that

           Dearth prevails all o'er,

And everyone doesn't s seem

           To be in his humour.

The rain makes the people

           In Bengal home bounding,

And everyone avers to go

           Outside for working.

To pass time, men in the house

          Watch TV or sing,

But the poor remain anxious for

            Their existing.

Village girls in the house

        During their intervals,

Like to sew the designed quilt

        With threads and needles,

Children in all houses like to

         Play on the floor,

And to run in the rain they enjoy

         More and more.

Someone thinks deeply for her

        Or his nearest one,

But the rain in single life

         Creates more tension.

The poets write poems getting

          Close relation-

With the charming beauty of

           The rainy season.

A good arrangement of beauty

             And suffering,

Is contributed to Bengal by

              The rain's wailing.

To stop its wailing with a spring

                 Of tears quickly.

The eastern sky starts beating

                   Its drums suddenly.

The wailing of rain is thus stopped

             Soon at that sound,

And then the wealth over floods

              Bengal all around.
